Alistair Darling, the former chancellor, has launched a campaign to encourage Scottish voters to say ‘no' to independence and to stay within the union.

Mr Darling said the Better Together campaign has cross-party support from politicians in the Liberal Democrat, Conservative and Labour parties. ‘My argument is actually what's best for Scotland? We are part of a social union, underpinned by an economic and political union.
