The Local Government Association has given its backing to Government plans for law and order. Plans, announced by PM Tony Blair and chancellor Gordon Brown in London this week, hope to tackle hard-core criminals. Chair of the LGA safer communities board, Hazel Harding, said: ‘Greater use of community-based sentences would enable councils, the probation service and other local partners to make sure that offenders are given the help they need to stop them slipping into a life of crime. The proposals are part of the Government's wider public service review.
