The LGA has hit back at claims made in a hard-hitting documentary that councils were not doing enough to tackle littering. Panorama, presented by author and president of the CPRE, Bill Bryson, showcased councils' relentless fight against litter, but criticised some authorities for allowing litter to accumulate in trouble spots. The LGA claims 70% of all litter comes from cars, but offences go unpunished because of a legal loophole. Cllr Paul Bettison, chairman of the LGA environment board, is calling for changes to the law. ‘Local authorities are effectively charged with tackling this anti-social behaviour with their hands tied behind their backs. Simple changes to the law would close the loopholes currently causing such confusion and inconsistency,' he said.
