LGA stabilises but still faces major challenges

As devolution and local government reorganisation reshape the sector, the LGA has improved its finances and leadership, says Heather Jameson —but must now prove its value and influence with councils, mayors and strategic authorities.

Amid the devolution frenzy, the headlines on reorganisation challenges and the Burnham blitz of policy projects – most of which impact on councils – local government has cracked on. 

This week's offer has been a crackdown on vape and betting shops in a bid to rebuild the ‘beating hearts of local communities'. What's more, it gives councils more flexibility to block shops that don't work for local people.
