The Local Government Information Unit's chief executive has announced his surprise departure just over a year after taking up the post. Tim Thorogood has been appointed as the new chief executive of the Falkland Islands Government. Dr Thorogood was previously chief executive at Swansea Council, but resigned after being suspended during a planning row over improvements to his home. An internal investigation was dropped after he resigned. It was decided earlier this year that he could keep the improvements after the council's planning committee approved retrospective plans. Prior to working at Swansea, his local government career includes time at Hillingdon LBC, Three Rivers DC and Haringey LBC. Chair of the LGIU Dave Wilcox said Dr Thorogood had put the think tank in a good position. ‘Although we are sad to see Tim go, he has managed to put the organisation in a position which will give it an exciting future,' he said. Dr Thorogood said he was sorry to be leaving LGIU after such a short time, but was ‘delighted' to have the opportunity to live and work in the Falkland Islands. He previously applied for the same post in 2002. ‘LGIU plays an influential role in local government and, after many important changes in the past few months, has a very bright future,' he said. Cllr Mike Summers, Falkland Islands spokesman, said: ‘This is a key appoint and one that requires energy, enthusiasm and commitment as well as relevant skills and experience. ‘Councillors are satisfied that we have found the right person for the next stage of our development and look forward to working with Tim to carry out the programmes and projects in hand.'
