Hammersmith & Fulham LBC is set to open a state-of-the-art library in the middle of the largest shopping centre in inner London. Shepherd's Bush Library will be situated at Westfield London, the 43-acre retail centre opened in 2008, and will begin serving residents later this summer. The library will include wi-fi Internet access and music mixing software, as well as traditional book, film and music-lending services. It will also incorporate a ‘Workzone' employment area, with interview facilities for jobseekers. Duncan Bower, Westfield's development director, said: ‘Westfield has worked closely with the council to build a contemporary facility which will greatly enhance the offer and services for local residents.' Cllr Paul Bristow, Hammersmith & Fulham's cabinet member for residents' services, said the site had been designed specifically to cater for residents' needs, and was ‘ideally situated'. But some residents' groups are not keen on the idea of visiting a major shopping centre in order to use public services. One group leader told The MJ: ‘The decision to put the library in a major retail park, smacks of the council and its partners baiting youngsters – and other library users – to come and spend their cash. We're not sure that's an acceptable premise on which to provide a public service.'
