Portsmouth councillors have become the latest local authority to throw a potential lifeline to local post offices, faced with the threat of closure. Council leader, Gerald Vernon-Jackson, is supporting moves by Essex CC to investigate whether it can take over post offices after a national consultation on the future of the service. Essex leader, Lord Hanningfield, has told the BBC that 50 local authorities have already expressed interest in its plans to combine local council and post office services. ‘This looks an interesting proposal. I understand how important Post Office services are to local communities,' said Cllr Vernon-Jackson.
