Liverpool bows to pier pressure

Liverpool City Council has returned £8.8m of a £9.2m government grant so cruises can start and end at the Pier Head in the city.

Liverpool City Council has returned £8.8m of a £9.2m government grant so cruises can start and end at the Pier Head in the city.

The grant was given to aid the construction of the cruise line facility. However, an independent arbiter ruled earlier this year that most of the cash should be returned because it was awarded on the basis that the terminal was used for ‘day call', not ‘turnaround'.
