Achieving the UK's net-zero ambitions requires immediate infrastructure action. A new whitepaper from ESCP Business School's Energy Management Centre highlights the critical role local authorities must play in delivering three technologies: Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), green hydrogen storage systems, and Ultra/High Voltage Direct Current (UHV/HVDC) transmission grids.

These solutions tackle the instability caused by an overreliance on intermittent renewables such as wind and solar. Renewables cannot guarantee energy security, especially during periods of low generation. As the UK phases out fossil fuels, we need a more diverse and strategic approach.
