Tory leader David Cameron unveiled his plans to scrap council tax capping in favour of a local referendum. But the Local Government Association has claimed voters should use the elections to vote out politicians who set their taxes too high. A spokesman for the LGA said: ‘Local authorities should have the power to determine, without interference, the appropriate levels of council tax for their areas. ‘If local people are unhappy with their council tax levels they can hold local politicians to account by voting them out in elections.' Under the Tory proposals, councils would have to ask the electorate if they wanted to raise high taxes. Ballot papers would be handed out with bills. They would also need to explain the reasons for the rise.
