London boroughs have topped a table showing the proportion of deaths in hospitals. Four out of the top five in the list were London councils, with Waltham Forest LBC reporting the highest percentage of hospital deaths with 69.1%, figures for 2009 to 2011 compiled by Public Health England (PHE) revealed. The only local authority outside of London to make the top five was Slough in fifth with 63.6%, below Enfield, Redbridge and Newham LBCs. Nationally, the proportion of people dying at home or in care homes increased from 38% in 2008 to 44% in 2012, according to the What We Know Now report. The evidence suggests that around 24,000 more people died at home or in care homes in 2012 compared to four years ago, reflecting the desire of many people to stay at home to die. Chief knowledge officer at PHE, John Newton, said: ‘Three years ago we knew very little about how and where people died in England but the National End of Life Care Intelligence Network has made a huge difference and the new knowledge is being put rapidly into action to enable people to have a better death.'
