In an increasingly complex world, the role of a monitoring officer is tough. It can be isolating, exposed and difficult. Rachel McKoy tells Heather Jameson about the new association set up to support them.

Local government monitoring officers (MOs) have never been so busy. MOs are pivotal but isolated strategic leaders, in an increasingly complex and – sometimes even hostile – political environment. Now a new body exists to professionalise, support and protect them.

The Association of Monitoring Officers – or AMO – was launched late last year by Lawyers in Local Government, headed by lawyer Rachel McKoy.
