Southwark LBC has unveiled a university scholarship programme to pay the fees of students from low-income families.

Southwark LBC has unveiled a university scholarship programme to pay the fees of students from low-income families.

The council will spend up to £50,000 this year on the scheme, the first of its kind in the country, on up to five students studying for either an arts, science or vocational degree from October onwards for the duration of their course. By 2013/14, funding will rise to £150,000 from the current £3m youth fund.
