The London Pensions Fund Authority has called for town hall pension schemes to be merged into sovereign wealth funds of up to £50bn in size to support national infrastructure projects.

Speaking after chief secretary to the Treasury announced £100bn infrastructure spending, LPFA chairman Edi Truell, said the 89 separate Local Government Pension Scheme funds controlling £150bn assets lack the scale to invest heavily in long-term projects.
