The Conservatives are still lacking a London mayoral candidate after Sir John Major declined David Cameron's invitation to stand. Mr Cameron told BBC Radio Five Live he thought Sir John would make an ‘excellent candidate', but a spokesman for the former prime minister said he had no intention to return to politics and no discussion had taken place between him and Mr Cameron. Last week Greg Dyke dismissed speculation he would stand for the role.
