A senior City of London Corporation official has rejected the possibility that ‘any person or firm could unduly influence' the authority's investment strategy, following a newspaper investigation into the activities of the City's lord mayor.

The Guardian this week described the City Corporation as investing around £100m in land purchases which critics claimed could boost the value of neighbouring developments involving Hammerson, a property firm employing Michael Bear, lord mayor of the City.
