Mayors and ICBs face the future

The Devolution White Paper’s vision includes a key role for mayors. Mark Sandford asks what they could achieve working alongside Integrated Care Boards.

The Government's decision in March to abolish NHS England attracted national headlines. But possibly more significant in the long term was the accompanying announcement that Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) would be expected to achieve a 50% reduction in administrative budgets by the end of 2025.

Establishing ICBs was a significant achievement for the previous Government. They provide a statutory framework for partnership between health and local government that had previously been lacking.
