The Local Government Association has warned meals on wheels in seaside resorts may have to end to pay for free bus travel. On 1 April, the concessionary bus scheme for pensioners will expand to allow older people to travel anywhere in England for free. This will benefit millions of people but will leave a number of councils, particularly those in seaside resorts, tourist hotspots and shopping areas, bearing the brunt of the cost. Councils could face shortfalls of up to £1.8m.
