Glasgow City Council has been slammed by think-tank Demos for chasing a ‘formulaic' vision of regeneration – in a report it commissioned. The think-tank, which has strong links to the Government, published its The Dreaming City: Glasgow 2020 report last week, in which it criticised civic leaders. The report, which is the result of an 18-month programme, calls for a ‘mass imagination programme' to tap into the aspirations of local residents. ‘City leaders are running on empty in terms of ideas to sustain the urban renaissance,' said the head of Demos' self-build cities programme, Melissa Mean. ‘To find some new ideas and energy, instead of dry consultations, which have pre-set boxes to be ticked, cities need to open up to the mass imagination of their citizens.' A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: ‘Glasgow's development and regeneration strategy – which has not relied on any notion of mass imagination programmes – has taken the city forward by leaps and bounds. ‘Far from pursuing a formulaic regeneration, Glasgow has transformed itself by building on its unique assets.'
