Melton BC's council offices are to be demolished after fire swept through the building last week. Nobody was injured, but two-thirds of the council offices were badly damaged in the blaze and will now have to be demolished. The cause of the fire is still being investigated. It will be several weeks before the demolition starts and it is expected to take around 10 weeks. ‘The staff have really risen to the challenge,' said council leader Malise Graham. ‘It's quite moving to see how really helpful people have been.' Cllr Graham said neighbouring councils have also offered help and despite the fire, a full council meeting was still held last week. Most services are now running again and the council has now acquired temporary offices at Melton Mowbray Building Society. Cllr Graham said the local authority is also using other existing council premises and some staff are also working in Nottingham. Local MP Alan Duncan tabled an early day motion last week in Parliament praising Cllr Graham and staff for how they responded to the crisis.
