A leading councillor has dismissed as ‘unnecessary’ plans for a city regional mayor for Merseyside – and said closer working relationships between the area’s leaders would be preferable.

A leading councillor has dismissed as ‘unnecessary' plans for a city regional mayor for Merseyside – and said closer working relationships between the area's leaders would be preferable.

Cllr Marie Rimmer, leader of St Helens MBC, said the Government's preference for strong, elected leaders across England's core cities – including Liverpool – would not benefit the area as much as a progressive, close relationship between neighbouring authorities, as happens in the Manchester city-region.
