Local government minister John Healey warned councillors against becoming too managerial.
Speaking at an APSE fringe event at the Labour party spring conference, he said: ‘We have got to stop councillors being good local government managers. They've got to be good local politicians.' He also cautioned against allowing local government workers to loose their ‘public sector' ethos.
He said: ‘There's a special ethos of public service that, if we lose it, will be almost impossible to recreate.'
