I was a little surprised to see an ad for BME candidates for Police Commissioner elections from Operation Black Vote that utilises the iconic picture of Lord Kitchener. I absolutely support the message that candidates from every community should be encouraged to consider standing as candidates, but I sincerely hope that in every instance both the selection & election process will throw up the best person for the job. I don't want to see anyone elected just because they come from a White background, a Minority Ethnic background or indeed any other group in society!But using the colonial General Kitchener (of Khartoum) as the face of the campaign is an interesting decision! He won face as a proconsul and Field Marshall in both Sudan & the First World War.
