The ex-Metropolitan Police chief has called for a Royal Commission to review the future of policing. Sir Ian Blair, who resigned after losing a power struggle with London mayor, Boris Johnson, said a review was necessary to consider proposals to change accountability. The Conservatives have pledged to introduce directly-elected mayors, with powers to set local policing priorities and sack poor-performing senior officers. Sir Ian warned this would change operational independence and could lead to a ‘revolving door' of police chiefs who refused to co-operate with political decisions. He called for a commission to resolve the challenges which will be heightened by spending constraints.
