Ministers could build one million ‘affordable' homes over five years, and still cut spending – but must reduce the cost of land and interest rates paid by landlords, a think-tank has reported.
A study by the New Economics Foundation (NEF), published on 11 November, suggests the Government's target to build 155,000 homes over the next four years is too ‘modest', and incorrectly linked to a £1.7bn savings plan. The NEF suggests instead that 200,000 affordable homes are needed each year, but argues it is possible to achieve the target and surpass chancellor George Osborne's planned savings across the sector.
