Local government minister, John Healey, has dismissed key proposals to ease the burdens involved in PFI projects. He claimed some of the recommendations by the Lifting the Burden's task force report would not be taken forward. Mr Healey said: ‘Some of the detailed recommendations present as burdens processes that are needed for proper financial management. ‘And the recommendations on PFI don't take fully into account the fact that PFI projects vary significantly.' LGA's director of finance and performance, Stephen Jones, who led the review, described Mr Healey's response as ‘deja vu' as it was similar to the response put out following the Lyons review – welcoming the report and then dismissing the contents. ‘It is not a satisfactory answer to say the Government needs the information. One needs to find a solution to the burden it is placing on local government.' PLUS: Michael Frater, ex-chief executive of Nottingham City Council, has been removed as chair of the Lifting the Burden task force since he retired. He left the council after difficulties with the political leadership and the task force by mutual agreement with the CLG, because he is no longer a serving chief executive. He has been replaced by South Tyneside chief executive, Irene Lucas.
