Tens of thousands of frontline civil servants belonging to the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) Union took part in mass walkouts last week over pay and terms and conditions, amid wider efforts to arrange the country's first general strike in modern history.
The PCS action involved staff working for the Department for Work and Pensions and branches of the Job-centre Plus network on 5 April and some 55,000 tax officials working at HM Revenue and Customs delaying their start to work until 1pm on Monday 8 April.
