Local government minister, John Healey, has revealed the latest guidance on Local Area Agreements (LAAs). Councils and their Local Strategic Partnerships are currently negotiating their 35 targets with the Government. The new guidance will give the framework for the negotiations. Mr Healey announced 11 pilots for the new LAAs and guidance on how the LAAs would work. He said: ‘These changes offer unprecedented opportunities for local leaders to set out a vision for their communities.' He called on local leaders to be ambitious and ‘deliver genuine solutions' to meet local aspirations. LGA chairman, Sir Simon Milton, said the new framework offered ‘greater clarity about the relationship of national and local priorities'. The documents published include: an overview of the purpose of LAAs draft statutory guidance for consultation on how the new laws will enable councils and LSPs to develop effective LAAs the second phase of operational guidance to support the negotiation of LAAs by June 2008.
