Missions: A powerful principle to drive institutional and place-based reform

As power shifts and local government is reshaped, mission-based working is no longer optional – it is vital to restoring trust in democratic institutions and equipping them to tackle today’s deeply interconnected challenges, argues Grace Pollard.

For most people, the idea of a government having missions only entered their orbit when Labour came to power in 2024.

The language has acquired some baggage in the time since, but the idea – that a government might orient itself around long-term, big picture societal goals – has resonated with many people, not least those working in local government.
