MPs should back mayors to avoid angry DINO-sores

The next General Election could be an extinction-level event, according to some. Witness the fevered manoeuvring on the conference circuit this month and you can see a political class that is scared for its own life. But do they have the answers?

Through the English Devolution and Community Empowerment Bill, the end of the UK's long and unsuccessful experiment with centralisation has been trumpeted. But it has not yet been fully realised. That matters, because the ‘take back control' impulse that once drove the Brexit vote has not yet been answered – and it is taking new forms.
