WHITEHALL

MPs to quiz top jobs

Parliament is to take a bigger role in scrutinising the appointment of 60 key public sector positions.

Ex-education department chief and former council chief executive, Sir Michael Bichard, is to become director of the new Institute for Government, set up to train ministers and senior civil servants in running Whitehall.

Sir Michael takes up the post in September and will step down as editor-in-chief of the SOLACE Foundation Imprint series. He has already announced he will be resigning as chair of the Legal Services Commission in August.
