Local authorities should do more to encourage pupils to walk, cycle or catch distinctive US-style yellow buses to school, as alternatives to car travel, according MPs. Members of the House of Commons transport select committee urged councils and government to work more closely with schools, parents and pupils in assessing the environmental and health impacts of different forms of transport, and said: ‘While there are benefits to reducing car use and encouraging walking and cycling, no single mode is suitable for everyone to use. ‘Safe and suitable alternatives to car use for children and young people must be provided, be they public transport, dedicated school busies, walking schemes, or safe cycling.'
