A cross-party group of influential MPs has warned local authorities against making deeper cuts to bus services next year. The House of Commons transport committee expects councils struggling with reduced budgets to make further cuts to ‘vital' bus routes, which provide access to key services for vulnerable residents.
Following its inquiry into bus services after the Spending Review, the committee's chair, Louise Ellman, attacked decisions made by councils to reduce networks without proper consultation, and described the effect on communities as ‘damaging'.
