The contract to provide a single telephone number for non-emergency calls to councils and the police has been awarded to Cable and Wireless. The firm, which is already one of the suppliers of the 999 service, landed the multimillion-pound five-year Home Office contract for the new non-emergency number 101. It is aimed at improving access to community safety advice, information and action in a partnership, and reducing the burden on the 999 service.
