Call for NAO powers to be dropped from Bill

The LGA warns allowing the NAO to recommend where councils can make improvements should not be included in the Local Audit Bill.

Proposals to hand the National Audit Office (NAO) powers to recommend where councils could make improvements should be withdrawn from the draft Local Audit Bill, the Local Government Association (LGA) has warned.

In a letter sent to all council chiefs on 6 August, LGA chief executive, Carolyn Downs, claims it is ‘simply not appropriate' for the NAO to undertake such improvement studies. She tells council chiefs the particular section of the draft Bill, set out in Clause 94, should be deleted.
