Newham LBC's mayor has accused the coalition of a ‘direct attack' on London's 2012 Olympics plan, warning ministers were not focused on sustained regeneration – and questioning why his council and football club, West Ham United, were left to ‘rescue' the £9bn project's legacy.

In an interview with The MJ, Sir Robin Wales said that while Olympics chiefs, such as Lord Coe, were successfully delivering a sporting legacy, other ministers and officials had ‘put at risk' additional benefits to deprived east London boroughs through last-minute planning and deep public spending cuts.
