Sir Robin Wales, mayor of Newham LBC, has promised to re-examine how Olympic boroughs can ensure workers on the 2012 project use their skills to benefit the local area. Speaking during a visit to Stratford in east London, site of the Olympic stadium, Sir Robin said Newham was ‘working hard to ensure residents are in a position to benefit from jobs created' by the Olympics project. It followed criticism that, despite government promises of jobs for local residents, many staff on Olympics construction sites were low-paid international workers staying in local bed and breakfast accommodation. Trade unions warned that ‘cheaper' international labour undermined UK residents. A spokesman for Newham LBC said: ‘We are working to ensure jobs are secured for as many local residents as possible.'
