The Cornish holiday resort of Newquay may become the first town in Britain to become an Alcohol Disorder Zone. The town's residents are fighting back to save the seaside destination, following the separate deaths of two teenagers this summer, after drinking locally. The resort has become a hotspot for stag night revellers and post-exam teenagers, leading to increasing problems with drink-fuelled disorder. Angered by the drunkenness and anti-social behaviour in what has been labelled ‘Newbiza', the town's citizens marched on both the town council and Cornwall Council's offices in the past two weeks, demanding action. Now, Cornwall Council has responded with a multi-agency approach with the police and town council, entitled Newquay Safe. A key part of the response will be to investigate the possibility of establishing an Alcohol Disorder Zone. Launched by the Government 12 months ago, the aim was to combat 24-hour drinking by charging licensed premises in the zone for the policing and local costs of dealing with the disorder. No council has yet taken up the opportunity. But a Cornwall Council spokesman admitted: ‘We are investigating and will take it forward, if we can. ‘If we are successful, we would be the first in Britain.'
