There's plenty of good news around for self-obsessed politicians. In the world of local government, more and more councils are streaming their meetings online, creating greater opportunities for them to be watched by more than the usual one man and his dog. The viewing figures may not be great, with Arun DC's chief executive recently admitting he was disappointed with the fact that fewer than 90 people watched his authority's full council meeting. But surely that's more than watch X Factor these days. The recently-passed Local Audit and Accountability Act also gives the public greater rights to film and record meetings, and councillors greater opportunities to watch themselves. Former Local Government Association chairman Lord Beecham is well aware of this danger. In one of the debates about the legislation, he jokingly suggested that the bill should ban selfies as a ‘matter of taste, rather than democracy'. David Cameron, Barack Obama and the Danish PM should take note.
