Northern Ireland's economy will never succeed without better community cohesion, according to a leading charity. The Community Relations Council (CRC), founded in 1990 to promote better relations between Protestants and Catholics in the province, claims ‘the economy cannot achieve its potential… if division is not at the same time being addressed at its root'. Speaking during Community Relations Week, CRC chief executive officer, Dr Duncan Morrow, said: ‘I believe now is a time of opportunity for Northern Ireland, economically and socially, and I call on everyone in society, including government, business and the community to play their part in ensuring that division does not continue to hamper Northern Ireland from achieving its potential.' A Northern Ireland Local Government Association (NILGA) spokeswoman said: ‘Local councils in Northern Ireland are actively involved in promoting positive community relations. ‘As the voice of local government, NILGA encourages the local councils to play their part in ensuring that the legacy of the past does not hinder the capacity for progress in Northern Ireland,' she said.
