North-South should be less them and us, and more all of us

The political landscape never stands still, and local government must continually move with it. In recent years, the growing appetite for devolution has owed much to the Conservatives' levelling up agenda – an attempt to address rising frustration in left behind northern towns.

That frustration was politically useful in winning the Red Wall. But it also spoke to a deeper truth: Westminster had, for too long, failed to address the widening economic gap between the North and South.
