Reducing unnecessary manufacturing packaging could help cut council tax bills by £4.8bn, the Local Government Association has revealed. ‘It will cost householders £4.8bn to bin packaging over the next six years, unless manufacturers stop using excessive packaging,' said Lord Bruce-Lockhart, chairman of the LGA. ‘Packaging waste increased by 12% from 1999 to 2005. If this trend continues it will cost taxpayers millions to get rid of, damage the environment and contribute to climate change.'
