Unions could take their legal challenge against the Government's decision to up-rate pensions in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to the Supreme Court, Brian Strutton, national secretary for public services at the GMB union, has warned.
Speaking after Court of Appeal judges this week rejected a formal legal appeal against the switch, co-ordinated by several public service unions, Mr Strutton said: ‘The courts ‘seem to take the view that the Government can do what it likes, even if this amounts to taking money off pensioners just because they used to work in the public sector'. It is estimated the decision to switch to the lower CPI inflation tracking measure could see the value of public sector pensions cut by up to 25%.
