The Audit Commission has scrapped directors' performance-related bonuses in order to tie-in with ‘the national mood of seeking best value for the public purse', it says. But while the organisation has rid itself of performance related bonuses and ‘enhanced salary payments', the top 25 managers will receive an average of just 1.2% less than before. Chief executive of the commission, Steve Bundred, said: ‘We fully recognise that, as a watchdog funded by the public purse, it is important for us to keep pay and bonuses under continuous and sharp scrutiny, just as we expect those we audit and inspect to do.' Local government leaders say the Audit Commission is one of the last public sector organisations to scrap performance related bonuses. Deputy chair of the LGA, Cllr Richard Kemp, said: ‘They are being responsive and listening to what people are saying. I hope all of local government will follow suit.'
