PFI troubles ahead

Caroline Mostowfi outlines the challenges of Private Finance Initiative expiry and why it is time for councils to act now to proactively influence the way their contracts end

Over the course of the 1990s and 2000s, more than 300 local authority projects were delivered through the private finance initiative (PFI). They encompass primary and secondary schools, leisure centres, street lighting, waste facilities, blue light facilities, social housing and care homes.

Most of these projects have a 20-to-30-year contract term and many will expire over the course of the next Parliament.
