Communities secretary Eric Pickles has sharply rebuked the leader of a Somerset town for refusing to fly the flag of St George on the grounds it was offensive to Muslims.

In an official email sent to Cllr Eleanor Jackson, leader of Radstock Town Council, Mr Pickles branded the decision a 'spectacular misjudgment' because the flag 'is a unifying symbol for England'.
