Plans to devolve council tax benefit controls under way

Communities secretary, Eric Pickles, has launched a new consultation on council tax benefit (CTB), which aims to put local authorities in charge of all aspects of the system.

The DCLG said devolving CTB could save taxpayers up to £480m a year – meaning ministers had decided to proceed with plans for a 10% cut in the current £4.8bn annual CTB budget in exchange for localised control.
