Plymouth City Council has signed a £150m deal with Amey to improve its highways services. The 10-year deal is expected to save the council £6.2m, with further potential savings of £5.6m possible if best-practice construction principles are successful. Amey will carry out design and maintenance work on behalf of the council in addition to taking on day-to-day responsibilities, such as filling in potholes, urban traffic control and highway drainage. The new Amey highways team will be based alongside the council's existing transport teams for the first four years of the contract. Cllr Kevin Wigens, cabinet member for transport, said: ‘A big part of this change is giving customers far more of a say about how the streets of Plymouth are run.'
