Political change tests organisational maturity

A change in political control is one of the most significant moments in the life of a council. Priorities shift, relationships reset and expectations rise rapidly. For chief executives, senior officers and elected members alike, the challenge is not simply managing the transition but making the most of the opportunity it presents.

This year's local elections feel particularly significant because they are taking place against a backdrop of wider change across local government. Financial pressures continue to mount, devolution is reshaping the landscape, and many councils are contemplating what may become the most significant reorganisation of local government in a generation.
