I was particularly struck by this comment in the Daily Telegraph which articulates a point of view around the, at times, petty enforcement of traffic laws. The advent of CCTV gives hugely intrusive powers to both local authorities and the Police. For a group of metropolitan authorities, largely Labour, to seek new powers of enforcement over minor traffic offences is worrying. As a matter of principle we should be rolling back state intervention, not increasingly the activities of public bodies. There are of course exceptions, but when it comes to increasingly penal fines for minor traffic offences I get worried.I fear we are moving into the territory of raising cash rather than doing the right thing & fining people more for cutting the corner off a bus lane than for shop lifting just feels wrong.
